The town of Vis is once again becoming the center of the film industry, thanks to a unique film event 35mm Vis Film Festival. During the festival, which is being held in its second edition this year, from 6 to 10 September 2024, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the magic of legendary films shot on 35 millimeter film strips under the starry sky. This year the festival is dedicated works by Oscar winner Miloš Forman, and the arrival of his wife, respected author, Martina Formanova, was also announced.
Oscar-winning films such as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Amadeus" and "The People vs. Larry Flynt" are only part of the festival's film program. One of the distinguished guests of the festival is President of the European Film Academy Mike Downey, and there is a name Dieter Kosslick, the longtime director of the Berlinale, who chose a gourmet film for the end of this festival. This time, it is about the movie "Chocolate" with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp in the main roles.
The special feature of this film festival is that the organizers do not want it to turn into a big, mass festival visited by thousands of people, but rather want it to remain small and special - a kind of boutique festival on the Croatian coast.
The festival begins with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Hrid Summer Cinema, and on this occasion the organizers decided to present a screening to the City of Vis and all visitors, and to celebrate the beginning of the cinema with a film that was shown back then, back in 1964. It is about the legendary "Gone with the Wind" starring Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Thomas Mitchell. Proof of how powerful cinema and film are as media is that today we all know legendary scenes from movies, actors and the occasional line. It will be an exceptional experience to watch it on September 6 in the cinema under the starry sky.
The organizers believe that this festival will be a refresher in activities for the Vis community, and at the same time they emphasize that the importance of Vis among filmmakers does not need to be further emphasized precisely because of the locations and the numerous films that were shot on the island and the town of Vis. We can all agree that it is film festival exactly what Vis deserved, and special charms are brought to the festival by 35 millimeter tapes and projectors.
- What gives a special feeling is to experience movies by watching them from a film tape, hear the sound of the sea and waves in the background, and experience the entry of the Jadrolinija into the harbor from the cinema. I'm sure this year's festival will be fantastic, because watching Jack Nicholson, my friend Woody Harrelson, Courtney Love, Juliette Binoche, John Depp, Judy Dench on 35mm film will be a truly unique event. Most of the films are in English, and all films are subtitled in Croatian, so we hope to attract tourists and local audiences., pointed out the founder of the festival and the long-term director of the Karlovy Vari festival, Rudolf Biermann.
