A walk through Perušić – a combination of history and the soul of Lika

The most famous historical buildings in Perušić are: Old town Perušić, known as the Turkish Tower, and Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The tower was originally built in the shape of a square with three watchtowers at three corners. However, due to the Ottoman conquest in the 16th century, only one floor of the central tower has survived, and the places that served as watchtowers and cannon emplacements are visible.

At the end of the 17th century (1685) it was occupied by Crusader troops, but was soon abandoned and partially collapsed. Today, the Perušić municipality is renovating the tower to become a new attractive lookout point – entirely in glass, on a raised third floor.

Right next to the tower is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which, upon entering, causes all visitors to sigh with its indescribable beauty. From the outside, you might think it is an ordinary church, but inside you will discover a true melting pot of religions, as, like Hagia Sophia, it was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman occupation.

At the end of the 17th century, it was returned to its original Christian service, but traces of Islamic influence are still present. This mixture with Christian elements gives it an unquestionably unique appearance, and every inch of the space is covered with works of art that are difficult to recreate today.

After a historical tour, visitors often continue to explore the cultural treasures of the Perušić area. Very close to Grabovača Park is Eco village KršThis renovated hamlet, once abandoned, now offers four traditional houses for rent.

The owner has been renovating the property since 2007 with the aim of finding peace and escape from everyday life – a goal he has fully achieved. Complete silence, occasional sounds of nature and clear night skies create an atmosphere that is impossible to convey. On hot summer days, the large swimming pool provides additional pleasure, and the peaceful surroundings and fresh air make this place ideal for family or teambuilding.

A little later, the road brought us to Vlainić family brandy tasting rooms in Prvan village near Perušić. We tasted homemade, healthy brandy – which warms the body and makes the heart smile – along with cured meat delicacies and Lika pole.

Love and effort are felt in every drop, and the owners are proud of the dozen or so types of brandy that can be purchased on site. Another reason why you'll always be happy to return to Lika.
