Weekend in Lika: undiscovered beauties, legends and flavors of forgotten Croatia

Lika is a natural paradise, where contrast creates magic. At dawn, the sun breaks through the beech forest and reveals the emerald Plitvice Lakes, where a new day is born in the morning mist. However, the magic of this region lies beyond the beaten track: the northern slopes of Velebit hide Grabovača Cave Park with underground halls millions of years old, and the Lika River winds through deep canyons, offering both wilderness and peace. Vast meadows and dense forests hide secluded villages at the foot of Velebit, quiet and melodic, where you hear only the chirping of birds and the murmur of the river.

Lika as a destination actually has seven protected natural areas, including three national parks, making it an ecological oasis where you can find peace for your soul and body.

Legends and myths

According to local legends, the ghosts of old stories still live in these mountains and valleys. Legend of the Black Queen It says that a benevolent fairy descended from the Velebit heights to hear the cries of thirsty people: her tears flowed into Plitvice and shaped the valleys, and the queen allegedly said: “This is your land and your homeland… My tears will create water!” This fairy tale exudes pride and love for this region. According to tradition, the Velebit fairy guards untouched nature, and the howling of wolves echoes through the forests at night – Lika is also called "the land of wolves", and their echoing at dusk underlines the magic of this wild nature landscape.

The cuisine of Lika delights with its honest and strong flavors. On the table are local specialties: young Lika squeaker (cheese that crunches under your teeth) goes perfectly with smoked bacon, and the main gourmet delight is roast lamb – slowly roasted under a baking sheet with rosemary and garlic. Trout is caught along the Lika and Gacka rivers: tender and golden, roasted right on the spit. Every meal is rounded off with a glass of homemade brandy (plum brandy or mead) that warms the soul, and don't forget the smell of fresh bread under a baking sheet – it's the crowning glory of every meal.
