Imotski is an old town, located in the south of the Republic of Croatia, at the intersection of Dalmatian Zagora and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is first mentioned in 950 in the work Imperial administration of the Byzantine emperor and historian Constantine Porphyrogenitus.

Imotski has all the characteristics of a coastal town, thanks mostly to the climate and urban architecture of the old town. Stone houses, steep narrow streets with stone steps are witnesses to the former appearance of this place whose old core is also protected. Several buildings with beautiful facades and iron fences from the Art Nouveau era, speak of stylistic currents that have not passed this environment.
The city dominates Topan Fortressand, created in the 10th century, which throughout history had an extremely strategic significance. Today, it is interesting to visitors because of its preserved appearance and viewpoints on the city, the "Gospin Dolac" stadium and the Blue Lake. Within the fortress there is also a votive church dedicated to Our Lady of Anđela, the patron saint of Imotski. Several events take place around the walls in the summer, and under the fortress itself there is a monument to Croatian defenders, the work of the academic sculptor Kruna Bošnjak. From Topana, going down the 92 stone steps of Imotska, built in the 18th century, we come to Imotski Square, where there is also a monument to the great poet, Tino Ujević from Imo.

Blue and Red Lake
Below Topana is also Blue Lake, a favorite promenade, and in the summer months the main beach in Imotski. The depth varies, so in winter and spring it is about a hundred meters, and at the beginning of autumn it can dry out. Stone serpentines built in 1907 lead to its clear surface.
In the immediate vicinity there is also Red Lake, the deepest karst lake in Europe whose depression depth is 528 meters, and the water depth reaches more than 300 meters with the bottom below sea level.

Numerous legends and stories are connected with these lakes, as well as others in the Imotski region created by the collapse of underwater caves, such as the one about the arrogant Gavan or Asanaginica, which was sung in a folk ballad and translated into most world languages. According to this story, the tomb of Asanaginica is located on the edge of the Blue Lake, right on the place where today the theme park is dedicated to this ballad.
///The most beautiful legends tell of lakes as deep as a secret
Historical artifacts from prehistory to the present day are preserved in Homeland Museum and the museum collection of the Franciscan monastery. They bear witness to the long and stormy past of this area, which has always been in the throes of historical turmoil.

Imotski is also interesting because of its location and traffic connections, which makes it an ideal base for a vacation. You are one hour away by car Medjugorje and Mostar in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina, an hour since ancient times Split, and thanks to the tunnel Sv. Elijah, only half an hour from Makarska, the sanctuary of Vepric and other places on the Makarska Riviera.
