Krapje, a small village located in the heart of Lonjsko polje Nature Park, will host a unique event that will allow visitors to step back in time and discover the wealth of trade and exchange that shaped this region. Following the trail of the past – trade and exchange, a historical event that will be held May 11, 2025 in the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, is dedicated to the history of border guards, trade routes, cultural exchanges and trade that connected Posavina with other parts of Croatia, but also beyond, throughout the centuries.

History of trade in Posavina
Krapje – a village of architectural heritage, located along the Sava River, has historically been an important trading center in Posavina. Trade and exchange of goods, with a developed river route, played a key role in the life of the local community. Through the event, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the ways in which border guards lived, how people traded, how the Sava River was an indispensable part of trade routes, and how different cultures, peoples and customs have shaped the daily life of this region throughout history.
Program of the event
The event In Search of History – Trade and Exchange will be rich in interactive content and educational tours that will allow visitors to immerse themselves in history. Reconstructions of trade scenes will be set up, border battles, and participants will be able to participate in bartering simulations, where they will learn about ancient trading and exchange techniques, from bartering products to trading old coins.

-The highlight of the event will be Battle for the Čardak, a spectacular reenactment of the conflict between Turkish invaders and border guards from the late 18th century. The reenactment in the Krapje area will include authentic weapons and uniforms, creating an authentic atmosphere of a historical battle.
The event will feature historical units: the Gradiška Regiment Novska, the Lika Regiment Gračac, the Bjelovar Border Guards – Hussars 1756, as well as guests from Hungary gathered in the historical unit of the Imperial and Royal Line Infantry Regiment No. 61 St. Julien, as well as the Dubovački Streličari Karlovac. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness a fascinating display of battles, tactics and the lives of soldiers from the 18th century.

A special part of the program will be guided tours through Krapje, where visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of border routes and their importance for the development of this region. The tours will include details about the lives of border guards, trade in Posavina, the importance of the Sava River for transport, and how local markets and fairs developed.
Crafts and cultural program
Krapje is known for preserving traditional crafts, which are showcased at various events, and at the event In the Footsteps of the Past, visitors will be able to see and participate in workshops that showcase ancient handicraft techniques. Woodworkers, ceramists, weavers, and other craftsmen will showcase their skills, allowing visitors to learn about traditional crafts that were once an integral part of life in Posavina.

The cultural program of the event will include performances by local folklore groups, who will present the wealth of folk customs of the Posavina region through music and dance. These performances will be an opportunity for visitors to experience the authentic atmosphere of Posavina, and enjoy the music that accompanied border guards, merchants, and craft shops throughout history.

One of the most important parts of the event will be the gastronomic offer, which will showcase traditional Posavina cuisine. Visitors will be able to enjoy dishes prepared according to old recipes, such as baked dishes, homemade cheeses, brandies and cakes that were popular among merchants and locals, and of course the indispensable carp on forks.
In addition, local producers will exhibit their products – from homemade jams, cheeses and honey to traditional handicrafts. This part of the event will be an opportunity for visitors to purchase authentic products and support local craftsmen and producers, while also taking home a piece of the tradition and culture of Posavina.

Through educational tours, workshops, cultural performances and gastronomic offerings, the event will bring the past of the Military Border to life and allow visitors to experience the authentic atmosphere of Posavina.
