Novalja - a city of tourism and a candidate for the European City of Sports

On Thursday, October 3, at a press conference held in Hotel Olea, the City of Novalja presented its candidacy for European City of Sports in 2025 (English European Town of Sport 2025) in the category of cities with up to 25.000 inhabitants. The title of European City of Sports is awarded every year in several categories, and this initiative represents a significant step in the promotion of sports and an active lifestyle within the local community, but also at the international level.

Members of the ACES Europe Commission (European Cities and Regions of Sport) headed by GF Lupattelli, founder and president of ACES Europe spent the past two days touring the sports infrastructure and variety of sports programs in the city. After visiting the sports infrastructure and getting acquainted with the local sports community, the commission was presented with the BID-file, a document that includes all relevant data related to sports in the area of ​​the City of Novalja. This extensive document includes chapters dealing with the history of sports, budget allocations for sports, an overview of sports infrastructure, activities of local sports clubs and sports content intended for all ages - from preschoolers to women and the elderly, including people with special needs and disabilities. The commission members were satisfied with the sports infrastructure they visited and the sports programs presented to them. Their assessment was positive, and the quality of the facilities and the variety of sports programs offered were highlighted.

In addition to the members of the commission, the press conference was attended by Ivan Dabo, mayor of Novalja i Marina Šćiran, director of the Tourist Board of the City of Novalja.

– The candidacy of the City of Novalja for the title of European City of Sports in 2025 is a continuation of the new sports era that we have been building for many years, including the island's outdoor sports project. We are aware that for Novalja as the European City of Sports in 2025, this would be an additional step forward for even more active involvement of our population of all generations in sports and recreation, but also an important recognition that would further strengthen our offer of active tourism and outdoor activities that take place throughout the year. and which have already gained recognition among guests and the local population, she pointed out Marina Šćiran, director of the Tourist Board of the City of Novalja.

– The title of European City of Sports in 2025 will be the crown of our previous results and further development in the field of sports. Our area has already hosted many athletes and gold medal winners at the Olympic Games, and some of them actively participate in the development of this project. This title will be a strong incentive for the further development of sports activities and will also improve our community and the sports life of the citizens. At the same time, it will motivate us to continue strengthening our offer of sports tourism, he stressed Ivan Dabo, mayor of Novalja.

The founder and president of the ACES Europe association, GF Lupattelli, announced that the final decision for the European City of Sports in 2025 will be made in ten days and pointed out:

The press conference was attended by Šime Gligor, head of Kolan municipality Predrag Rukavina, the head of the Municipality of Povljana, who also announced the candidacy of the island of Pag for the European Island of Sports in 2026.

- Novalja has great potential to become a true example of how sport can positively influence health, social cohesion and tourism. The city has quality facilities with various sports content and diverse programs that encourage the involvement of citizens of all age groups in sports activities.
