Renovated Zavratnica Bay – even more beautiful and accessible

Velebit Nature Park is the largest protected area in the Republic of Croatia. But this nature park is also special in many ways. Within the park, you can enjoy conquering mountain peaks, exploring the Velebit underground in the Cerovačke špilje caves, and soaking up the sun's rays in the same day. in one of the most beautiful Croatian bays – Zavratnica.

And Zavratnica itself, along Cerovac caves, gives special value to the Velebit Nature Park. Located near Jablanac, opposite the island of Rab, around 130 plant species have been counted in the bay, and at the beginning of the 20th century, an upper path with a lookout and a promenade along the sea were built. The writer Vjenceslav Novak found inspiration for his works here, and the bay also contains the remains of a German warship from World War II that was sunk by Allied planes.

The renovated Zavratnica is ready for the tourist season

Velebit Nature Park successfully completed the revitalization of Zavratnica Bay and improved the infrastructure of one of the most beautiful bays on the Croatian coast. Through the project “Revitalization of Zavratnica Bay – a protected landscape and NATURA 2000 area in the Velebit Nature Park” Better accessibility is ensured and the natural heritage of this protected landscape is further preserved.

The works, which lasted six months, included, among other things, the arrangement and revitalization of pedestrian paths, the installation of information panels, and the arrangement of the observation deck and other infrastructural elements. Thus, Zavratnica bay is now fully prepared for the upcoming tourist season and will offer visitors an even more comfortable and safe stayThanks to this revitalization, visitors will be able to fully enjoy the natural beauty of this unique area.

The total value of the project is 320.000 euros excluding VAT, with the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund contributing 256.000 euros, while the Velebit Nature Park provided the remaining 64.000 euros.

The project improved conditions for visitors, enhanced safety and further strengthened the protection of Zavratnica's natural and cultural values.
