Biševo – a remote island of peace and magnificent nature

Biševo is the most remote Croatian inhabited island and is inhabited by only 13 domiciled inhabitants, but it is visited annually by about 150 thousand tourists. There are no shops, gas stations, or doctors on the island - only peace and magnificent nature. Biševo is an island that welcomes anyone who loves nature or wants to take a break from the hectic city life.

Recently, a new one was opened on the island Blue Cave Visitor Center - Biševo, so visitors to this small islet now have the opportunity to better familiarize themselves with the island's numerous attractions and its exceptional natural and cultural heritage, and to walk along organized themed trails. The center is located in the area of the former elementary school and should be a new source of life on the island of Biševo in the future. Photographs of plant and animal species with descriptions in Croatian and English are displayed in the halls, and educational films about the island's natural heritage can be watched, and the singing of seabirds that live in this area can be listened to using headphones.

The center was designed as an integration of natural diversity, exceptional karst phenomena, cultural heritage, economically rational management of resources, and modern ecological and tourist efforts that are presented to visitors in a unique way.

Perhaps the most famous jewel of Bisevo is The Blue Cave which was discovered to the world in 1884 by the Viennese painter Eugen Baron Ransonnet, since then the cave has become an unavoidable attraction of the Adriatic. The Blue Cave is characterized by a light phenomenon that leaves no visitor indifferent. Ransonnet writes that this rich source of light gives rocks, oars, and other objects under water a silvery-blue glow, and illuminates the airy stone bank from all sides, so that it looks like the castle of some sea god.

Bear's cave is another natural phenomenon from Biše, with a magnificent entrance as high as 27 meters that seems to lead to another world. Through Poseidon's Gate you enter the longest semi-submerged sea cave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic, which was once the habitat of the only Mediterranean seal, the Mediterranean fur seal, after which it is named. Today, fur seals no longer visit the cave, but the return of seals to the waters of the Adriatic Sea is a possibility that we must not ignore, so organized visits take care of the preservation of this valuable habitat.

Geostasis Biševo tells visitors about the geological origin of the island, its natural values, but also the cultural and traditional heritage of the inhabitants of this beautiful and exotic island. It stretches across the entire area of the island in a total length of 19 km and can be visited on foot, and for the most part by bicycle. This path was recently expanded with new sections, so now the Blue Cave Visitor Center - Biševo is connected to all the famous island locations, and in addition to visiting the Blue Cave - which until now was the only site open for visits - visitors can now enjoy many other facilities. .

Along with the well-maintained path for pedestrians and cyclists, there are signposts, information boards, bike racks, gazebos, a lookout point with a panoramic telescope, and there are also two cameras for monitoring the nesting of Eleonora's falcon. Four coastal artillery barracks were renovated and turned into rest areas with tables.

Along the paths, visitors will come across a total of 25 information boards, on which, along with a tourist map of the island of Biševo, the most important locations such as Modra and Medvida caves, Salbunara bay, but also the vegetation of Biševo, the most important animals such as the bottlenose dolphin, Eleonora's falcon and migratory birds, speleological and geological phenomena and objects, historical buildings such as the old Biševo school, the church of St. Silvestre, the Roman well and artillery barracks and the traditional agriculture of the island.

The concept of educational and thematic trails, which serve for the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage, has an educational and recreational character. Visitors can choose a segment of the educational trail according to their preferences, fitness and abilities.
