As climate change, hail and cloudbursts blow more and more, it is interesting to pick up the text about the "tornado near Novska" from 1892. The storm, which lifted a 13-ton train into the air and carried it in the air for about 30 meters, fascinated one of the pioneers of world meteorology and geophysics, and at the same time the author of the mentioned description - Andrija Mohorovičić (1857-1936).
Unlike most other well-known Croatian scientists who actually made their careers abroad, Primorac Mohorovičić, born in Prague, returned to his homeland shortly after studying in Prague. While teaching at the Naval School in Bakar, Andrija simultaneously collected numerous meteorological data, and in 1887 he founded a meteorological station in Bakar.
This work resulted in a doctorate at the University of Zagreb, where from 1893 Mohorovičić taught geophysics and astronomy. At that time he was already the manager of all meteorological stations in Croatia, and in 1901 he founded the Zagreb seismological station. In 1910, seismological work led him to the greatest discovery - the boundary between the Earth's crust and mantle, today better known as the Mohorovičić discontinuity or - more simply - the Moho layer.
The character and work of this in the full sense of "world, and our" scientist will be presented in more detail by the program of the first day of this year's "Margaret's summer”, The largest cultural and tourist event in the city of Bakar, the place of Mohorovičić's scientific and love rise: namely, he married Bakranka Silvija Vernić.
We will meet him through the already widely known Bakar "A walk through history”And thematic tour“Time machine of Andrija Mohorovičić”. It will be led by a seasoned interpretive duo: Iva Silla and Boro Štrbac, a cousin of Mohorovičić's copper relatives.
The completely free program will be enriched by an exhibition at the Maritime School, made up of never-before-seen objects from Mohorovičić's legacy, as well as "Mold”Short story performed by Sabina Gvozdić. The whole story begins this Saturday - June 25 at 18:00 in front of the Bakar hotel "Jadran".
Only, don't be late - in 1892, Mohorovičić was the first in Croatia to introduce the time service in XNUMX. We are not at all surprised that he arrived!
