Central Istria as a classroom for heritage interpreters

If you found each other these days in St. Peter's in the Forest, the diverse group of people who researched Supetar's details would surely attract your attention. These are the participants of the course that was held under the license of the leading European organization for heritage interpretation Interpreter of Europe. Through an intensive five-day workshop, participants honed their skills in presenting cultural and natural heritage. The interpretive approach aims to create deeper connections between visitors and heritage sites, engaging them, providing them with an unforgettable experience and pointing out the value and need to preserve originality.

She organized the course Central Istria Tourist Board with the support of the Municipality of Sveti Petar u Šuma. Most of the participants are stakeholders from that area who create programs for visitors. We are talking about a diverse group, from tourist guides, through employees of interpretation centers to imaginative farmers who intend to refine their offer. All of them surrendered to the coaching duo Iva Silla and Manuela Hrvatin, two women with extensive experience in creative tourism and heritage interpretation. Among other things, Hrvatin spent several years in the role of national coordinator of Interpret Europe for Croatia, and Silla is one of the most active trainers of that organization.

- The excellent energy among the great participants created the prerequisites for success. People driven by similar goals on this course are connected by heritage, she looked back Croatian.

It is difficult to summarize the impressions in just a few words, but here is what some of the participants said:

- The course for heritage interpreters changed my way of thinking and opened new perspectives on interpretation that includes the interaction of all participants, in these words Martina Gljušćić, manager of the House of Sausages in Sveti Petar u Šuma, commented on the recently held five-day education.

- This education will help me to get closer to natural resources through the educations and workshops that I conduct. We learned about presentation methods, what to pay special attention to, how to interest the listeners, how to connect them with the material and how to involve them, he says Martina Štifanić, owner of OPG Mirai Aromatica

He welcomed the participants on the first day Mario Bratulic, head of the Municipality of Sveti Petar u Šuma, presenting the Sausage House project and the vision of further development of the municipality.

- I am glad that people from our area can independently create tours and I hope that some of them will develop new tourist products. I am looking forward to the further development of cooperation, concluded the director of the Tourist Board of Central Istria Sanja Kantaruti who attended the training itself.

In Croatia, training courses licensed by Interpret Europe are recognized as a contribution to the quality of the presentation of destinations. So far, they have also been held in big cities, such as Dubrovnik, Split, Pula and Zagreb. However, their real strength is in uncovering the heritage stories of smaller places. That's how the participants spent one working day and in Tinjan. They were particularly enthralled by the story of the historic rebellion of the women of Tinja, which overthrew the government. They were also intrigued by the stone table with a view of Tinjanska Draga, around which elders were elected for years, and, as legend has it, with the help of a flea. They got to know the treasures of Enriko Depiero's Native Collection and were convinced, as Manuela Hrvatin concluded, that "central Istria has so much to tell that one course is just the beginning of wonderful discoveries."
