Grandma's cakes, Zagorje grandmothers' competition in preparation indigenous desserts according to recipes which they inherited from their mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers, is a unique manifestation of the Krapina-Zagorje County that promotes the values of women, family and keeps alive the gastronomic tradition of Zagorje.
The seventeenth "Babičini kolači" manifestation will be held in Zlatar, April 27th at 15 p.m.Last year's winner, Mirjana Štahan, comes from Zlatar with the cake "Jurjevski beciklin".
33 midwives from various parts of the county are competing for the title of winner. The winner is the one whose cake receives the most points for the authenticity of the recipe and ingredients, for the taste and appearance of the cake, and for the ingenuity of the presentation. Every detail that the eye can notice and the palate can taste is an important element in the scoring by the expert judging panel that announces the winner.
This year, the midwives will compete before a judging panel consisting of excellent gastronomic experts: Branko Čukelj, vice president of the Croatian Culinary Association and also the president of this year's judging panel, Štefica Gulija, owner of the pastry shop Torta i kolači "Tri uzitka" from Bedekovčina, and Dražen Đurišević, promoter of Podravka's cuisine.
In addition to one of the three winning places, the midwives are also competing for the visual impression award called "Originally Zagorje"In this category, the general impression is scored based on how close the contestants managed to get to the ancient spirit and tradition of Zagorje through their clothing, which they chose to wear during the event, and the decoration of their exhibition space.
