The easternmost Croatian town of Ilok is known for its Traminer and top wines, and only a few people know that it has a mountaineering bypass. For a long time, the mountaineering associations of Vukovar-Srijem County have been fighting to include these points in the Croatian Mountaineering Bypass, and since last year this 14 km walk vineyards and is officially marked.
Last weekend Croatian Mountaineering Association Liska from Ilok, named after the highest peak of this predominantly lowland county Liski, which is located at 297 meters above sea level on the border with the Republic of Serbia, invited Slavonian mountaineers to Vinkovo in Ilok and walk this trail.
We joined them and checked out what kind of walk it was. I must admit that I did not expect that on that Saturday morning in Ilok we will be greeted by snow and even follow a good part of the way. The interesting adventure lasted four and a half hours and I believe it will surprise everyone who is just waiting for the fields and vineyards.
Start at the Vukovo lookout
From the roundabout where the roads towards Šid and the road to the border crossing for Bačka Palanka separate, we continue on the state road 800 meters towards Šid, where before the noticeable road uphill we turn first into the vineyard. Following the signs, you should continue one kilometer along the road to the crossroads with the crucifix and turn there on the state road through the Vukovo vineyards. Access to the Vukovo lookout point is possible from the Ilok sports hall.
Vukovo is the starting point of a hiking trail Vukovo-lookout of the Scandal which is a checkpoint included in the Croatian Mountaineering Bypass in August last year.
The route I definitely recommend led from Vukovo to Kaniža, followed by Rađevac, Radoš, Duboki potok, Čukavac and the top of Liska. This was followed by a course of photography and a view of the stone that marks the top of 297 meters above sea level.
Liska was followed by a walk to the Scandal lookout point, which has been a checkpoint on the Croatian Mountaineering Bypass since last year. The scandal is a vantage point with a view of the northwestern slope of Fruška gora, vineyards near Ilok, Ilok and Šarengrad. There is also an abandoned house of the Croatian border police for surveillance of the state border with the Republic of Serbia. The lookout point is 1600 meters away from the top of Liska and is located on the border.
