It will open its doors to visitors this weekend House of the Pannonian Sea within the Papuk Nature Park. Saturday and Sunday March 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 17 p.m. visit the House of the Pannonian Sea and go back to the distant past, 16 million years ago, when Papuk was an island where rhinos roamed and around which an extinct species of shark swam today.
The mountains of Papuk, Psunj and Krndija in the then sea, and later the lake were islands of the “Slavonian archipelago”. Numerous fossils of marine animals come to the surface almost every day. In addition to corals, sea urchins, sponges, snails, shellfish and seaweed, parts of the skeletons of large fish, vertebrates of dolphins and whales, and the teeth of giant sharks were also found. The shark at that time was as much as 20 meters long, and for example the largest, living today, white shark is half smaller, ie only about ten meters long, which gives us a picture of how many huge sea monsters lived in the Pannonian Sea.
