Mljet National Park, located on the island of the same name in the Adriatic Sea, is one of the most important natural treasures of Croatia. Its untouched nature, interesting and diverse flora and fauna, and unique cultural and historical heritage make it a unique area that is protected and declared a national park. November 11, 1960
Mljet National Park is the oldest marine park in the entire Mediterranean, and it covers almost 5 hectares, including the sea belt 300 meters from the coast, islets and rocks, thus occupying approximately a third of the island.
The cultural and historical heritage of this area dates back to the time of the Illyrian tribes, the Roman Empire and the Republic of Dubrovnik, and the most prominent monuments stand out remains of the Roman palace in Polače and the Benedictine monastery at on the island of Saint Mary in the Great Lake. Its "salty" lakes (Malo and Veliko jezero), lush flora, green vegetation and the unique panoramic view of indented coasts, cliffs, rocks and numerous islets also have a great merit in being declared a national park.
On Monday, November 11, 2024. Mljet National Park celebrate yours 64. anniversary foundation, with special emphasis on the preservation of natural processes in the unique system of two salt lakes surrounded by dense forests of pine and Aleppo pine with special promotion sustainable and active tourism.
Mljet National Park has become a symbol of the preservation of Croatia's natural heritage as a result of many years of protection, but also a place where culture, traditional way of life and modern goals of nature protection come together.
By marking this 64th birthday of the Mljet National Park we remember all who have contributed since the announcement in 1960. We invite everyone to be responsible guardians of this precious space, which was bequeathed to us by the local population through centuries of conscious use of the natural resources of the island of Mljet, the Mljet National Park points out.
