Trogir and Split - little and big places, two pearls of the Adriatic

Split is the largest city on the Croatian Adriatic coast, and Trogir, which is located thirty kilometers to the west, is "smaller" compared to Split, but it also has numerous advantages that simply make it a must-visit. Read some of the suggestions below what to do for two days in Split and Trogir.

The old town center of Trogir is located on an islet that connects the mainland with the island of Čiovo, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a perfectly preserved Romanesque island town. There is also Gelato bar Bella where you can always refresh yourself with great ice creams. One of them is "Speculaas lemon", which was declared the best ice cream in Croatia in 2018.

Namely, at that time the Gelato bar employee Kristina Prgomet was at the competition Gelato festival challenge held as part of the Split gastronomy and tourism fair "Adriatic Gastro Show" won first place in the competition of 14 ice cream makers from the best Croatian pastry shops. After a delicious sweet-ice refreshment, you can go sightseeing in the (old) town.

One of the must-see places in Trogir is Radovan's portal. It is about the monumental Romanesque-Gothic portal of the cathedral of St. Lovre. It is assumed that the Trogir cathedral was built on the site where an old Greek temple once stood - Trogir is on the border between III. and II. century BC founded by Greek colonists from the island of Vis. As its name suggests, the cathedral is dedicated to St. Lovri, but also St. Ivan Trogir - the patron saint of the city, whose tomb is located in the cathedral itself. The construction of this cathedral lasted almost four centuries, so it combines Romanesque and Gothic elements and Renaissance elements.

Walking through the old center of Trogir, you will come across a huge wooden rooster. It is about the spoils of war that the people of Trogir brought home after the battle of Lepanto in 1571 in which the united Christian forces defeated the Turkish navy. One of the symbols of Trogir is Kairos – the relief of the Greek god of the same name from IV. century before our era. Today it is kept in the monastery of St. Nicholas, and its replicas in various versions can be seen in various places throughout the city. One of Trogir's gastronomic strengths is the traditional ones Trogir ravioli - they are made from sugar, eggs, fat, flour, orange and lemon peel, and maraschino and rose liqueur. Everything is so beautiful in Trogir, it even catches the attention of passers-by "Petar Berislavić" elementary school building which was built in the neo-Gothic style and has the status of a protected cultural asset. One of the symbols of the old city center is i Kamerlengo Castle built along the sea coast, primarily for defense purposes.

As for gastronomy, Trogir is not only proud of its award-winning ice cream and the local version of ravioli, it has three Michelin-recommended restaurants, one of which is Mare restaurant. He is the owner and also the chef of this restaurant Robert Predrag Žmire, one of the finalists of Masterchef in 2011. Every taste there represents a superb gastronomic experience that combines the synergy of ambient gastronomy with current world culinary trends, and of course in that story delicious snacks are accompanied by excellent wines. Some of them are also white vintage itches and tendons Ivan Jukić named from Imotski Gigolo or Zadar Degarra Bomary – a blend of grape wine (cuvée merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah) and marasca cherry wine.

For a multi-day stay in Split and its surroundings, you need comfortable and functional accommodation. It is highly recommended heritage hotel Fermai which is located in Livanjska Street at house number 5, only 500 meters from Diocletian's Palace and 900 meters from the Split ferry port. Label heritage - it carries heritage because it is located in an Art Nouveau building completed more than a hundred years ago, in the midst of World War I. It is the work of an architect Petar Senjanović which brought the spirit of Viennese Art Nouveau to Split and it is one of the rare Art Nouveau buildings in Split in general. For a significant period, this building was the headquarters of Split University.

In a hotel Fermai you can leave your things, take a breather and start exploring the old core of the city, which has been on the UNESCO list of protected cultural heritage since 1979. Split is the second largest city in Croatia, with satellite cities merged with it, such as the already mentioned Trogir or else Castle, Solina and Omiš makes up an urban agglomeration of more than a quarter of a million people, but walking through the narrow streets of the old town you can feel the intimacy of a small town, although there are few residents left because the residential areas have mostly undergone commercial conversion in the last couple of decades. In Split, as a big city, there is also Christmas shop which is open all year round, as well as stores where rubber ducks are exclusively sold in all shapes and forms, and one of them defiantly highlights a message in the window "Duck you!"

Split waterfront is one of the most beautiful urban promenades on the Adriatic. It's nice to blend in with the palm trees, cruisers and city bustle, and in the immediate vicinity there is also Diocletian's Palace. It is not known for sure when Diocletian was born, but it is assumed that it was in today's Solin. He steadily climbed the ranks of the military hierarchy and eventually became emperor himself. He is one of the few emperors of that time who died of natural causes, and the curiosity is also that he himself retired, and as a "retirement cottage" he had a palace built that still bears his name. In order to use another example to illustrate what kind of face Diocletian was, let's also mention that he is the only Roman emperor who declared himself a god - the earthly reincarnation of Jupiter and was confirmed by the Roman Senate. All those who tried it before were declared usurpers and eventually killed.

In addition to being visited by rivers of tourists, Diocletian's Palace has also served as a setting for numerous popular culture successes, including mega popular series Game of Thrones which was recorded in the western basement halls. Split peškarija, that is, the fish market is located on the edge of Marmontova Street, in a strategic location near medicinal sulfur springs, and therefore there were never too many flies and other insects there. The Split spas in Marmontova street were active for over 120 years, and as of September 1 this year, they were moved to a new address. Vestibule, Peristyle, Golden Gate, Ghetto, Cathedral of St. It blows - these are all places that you must visit when you are in Split. One of those "must be" location is i Temple of Jupiter, including Church of St. Martin whose dimensions are only 10 m x 1,64 m, which makes it the smallest church in Split. The temple of Jupiter was built by Diocletian as part of his palace, and at the entrance to the temple there is a sphinx that he had brought from Egypt. The temple was later turned into a baptistery dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and the crypt of St. Tommy.

After wandering around the city, you should have something delicious to snack on restaurant Makarun is always a good choice. It is located in Marulićeva street at house number 3, in the palace itself, and they are known for their handmade pasta, especially macaroni, hence the name of the restaurant. They offer fresh fish from the daily catch, degustation menus in courses and classic On the menu Menu. Of course, they also offer premium olive oils and wines - for example Zinfandel (Crljenak) from the Bratinčević garage winery in Kastelani.
